State of Decay 3 Developers Face Discrimination Charges & Development Crisis

A recent lawsuit filed against the developers of “State of Decay 3” alleges that employees were forced to work without compensation and are owed back wages. The company’s executives also allegedly used racially charged language during a meeting with employees, which led to some workers being fired over their anger at being insulted.

The “state of decay 3 release date” is a game that has been in development for a long time. The developers have faced some discrimination charges and are now facing a development crisis.

State of Decay 3 Developers Face Discrimination Charges & Development Crisis

Kotaku met with current and past workers of Undead Labs, the creator of State of Decay 3, to learn more about their plans after Microsoft’s purchase.

With its State of Decay offering, Undead Labs has carved itself a place in the gaming industry, raising player expectations for the third installment. Support for the development studio has just been announced, as well as a fresh signing for the team. Furthermore, with Microsoft’s purchase of the company, it seemed that the firm had adequate resources to build the game without serious issues, but recent evidence reveals that the problem is not just a shortage of content.

According to sources, the development system is “inconsistent.”

Twelve current and former Undead Labs workers spoke with Kotaku, and it was reported that the firm had collapsed as a result of the aforementioned Microsoft takeover. One former employee recalls, “The testing team worked incredibly hard, pointing out all the flaws and attempting to repair them,” but “the executives disregarded such worries and stated stuff like ‘Don’t log multiplayer bugs’ to demonstrate false advancement [in State of Decay 3].”

“The development milestones were a collection of things that seemed like they were placed there so we could cross them off the list,” says one Undead Labs employee.

“The development milestones were a jumble of features that weren’t about developing an enjoyable game, but rather about ticking things off a list.” Employees often point to a lot of negativity and conflict with certain colleagues if this issue slows down the team’s development. “This tension is worsened by prejudice against female workers, non-binary and other marginalized groups,” according to Kotaku sources.

Discrimination that persists

A former employee adds, “When I interviewed Lab [Undead Labs] workers, I was presented with the concept that it was a studio in transition, prioritizing diversity, equality, and inclusion.” “The studio was really about Microsoft executives painting a DEI (diversity, equality, and inclusion) front while women were routinely ignored, rejected, silenced, and blamed.”

“Women were continuously disregarded, silenced, and blamed,” says the author. – An employee of Undead Labs

Then there are other testimonies from women who claim that their positions in the studio were reduced to that of negotiators or that they were discarded based on trivialities like their expertise of video games. As a result, Kotaku reached out to several executives at Undead Labs to obtain their view on the company’s recent track record in this area, which includes a high percentage of employing women, non-binary persons, and other marginalized groups.

It was in this setting that Anne Schlosser, the company’s first head of people and culture, arrived, ostensibly to modernize the company’s operations. According to Kotaku sources, she was a lady who didn’t do anything for her coworkers. One former employee claims that “there was a guy on the SoD3 team who was really sexist, and Anne did nothing about it.” “On the Technical Art team, there was a dreadful boss, and Anne took his side.”

“It was a complete shambles.” Individuals went, and newer people took their place” – former Undead Labs employee

“Before I departed Undead Labs in a regular reorganisation, I implemented a new recruiting strategy that improved the diversity of the company by nearly 30%,” Anne says. While I was at Undead Labs, female, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC coworkers flourished in leadership and individual contributor positions.”

‘They were constantly piling on more and more features for more and more demos,’ says one former developer, ‘It was total chaos.’ Schlosser’s departure did not improve the working environment, which continued to drag on development problems both with the progress of projects and the constant turnover of staff: ‘They were constantly piling on more and more features for more and more demos.’ Ones were departing, and younger people were taking their place. Even when coding specialists told a vendor, ‘No, this doesn’t function at all,’ they disregarded the advice and added additional features before the deadline.”

Several sources, on the other side, would have appreciated some assistance from Microsoft, which has previously said that it has entire faith in the Undead Labs project:

A former employee remembers, “There was no evident effect of [Microsoft’s] help.” “From my perspective, nothing improved, and things only grew worse.”

Kotaku reached out to Microsoft directly to inquire about the developer’s working environment. From there, the outlet was told that “Undead Labs has seen many positive changes over the last few years, and we’re confident in the direction the team is taking in the development of State of Decay 3, one of our most ambitious open-world games,” and that “all Microsoft studios follow a practice of inclusion and respect.”

Kotaku seems to have unearthed another more inconsistency in the video game production business, adding to what we already know about Irrational Games and Activision Blizzard’s issues. For the time being, we’ll have to wait and watch how this disagreement plays out, which, as is clear, might have an impact on the team’s mental health as well as the development of State of Decay 3.
