Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Film Has Been Delayed Indefinitely

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which was originally slated for release on May 25th, has been delayed indefinitely. The film will now not be released until 2020. Disney is still expected to debut new Star Wars content this year with Episode 9 in the fall of 2019 and Episode 10 in 2021.

“Rogue Squadron” is the name of a video game and has now been delayed indefinitely. Patty Jenkins’ “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” film was originally scheduled for release on December 16, 2018 but has now been postponed indefinitely.

The live-action version of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, directed by Patty Jenkins, is unlikely to debut on December 22, 2023, as planned. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, the Wonder Woman filmmaker has been busier than anticipated and will not be able to start preproduction by the end of the year as scheduled. There’s even a chance she’ll pull out of the project.

The Hollywood Reporter reports:

[…] The manufacturing of Squadron has been canceled. Jenkins is expected to return to the project after she has completed her prior obligations. […]

It’s unclear which of Jenkins’ obligations were in question, if any at all, although she’s currently working on Wonder Woman 3 for Warner Bros. and a Cleopatra film for Paramount. According to sources, Wonder Woman 3 was supposed to come after Squadron, but that might change now that the latter has been ruled out.

During Disney’s investor day in December 2020, Lucasfilm disclosed its intentions for a live-action Rogue Squadron film. Jenkins accompanied the announcement with a video in which she explained her love of flying and said that her father was a combat pilot.

“As a director, it’s been a longstanding goal of mine to produce a great fighter pilot picture,” Jenkins said. “As the daughter of a brilliant fighter pilot, witnessing my father’s squadron take off in their F4s every morning and hearing and feeling the awe-inspiring power and elegance are some of the fondest memories I have.” When he died in the line of duty, it sparked a burning ambition to one day put all of those feelings into a wonderful film. I knew I’d discovered my next film when the ideal script came together with another real passion of mine, the magnificent universe of Star Wars. I’m really delighted and thrilled to be a part of it, and I’m thankful to Lucasfilm, Disney, and the fans for making it possible.”
