Community Focus – Omni Props

What is an Omni?
Omni is a term used to describe the “one” of each specific item in any game. It’s what makes every card, weapon and car unique and rare in a multiplayer online game (MMO). The more you play that one particular thing, the more likely it will be found by another player who then may sell or trade with you for something else they want. To ensure your account balance stays healthy and never falls below zero, all items are stored on digital assets called Omnis which can only be bought from other players via real money transactions. If a server goes offline unexpectedly because of technical difficulties or financial issues – as has happened multiple times this year due to some games being free-to-play but not supported financially – there are no worries about losing your precious purchases because everything was backed up on Omni tokens so if anything happens during maintenance all users have been paid back through these tokens meaning you’re safe!

You may be thinking to yourself as you read this Community Focus, “Self, that’s a lot of words.” Nobody has time to read everything.” Let me just say this: 1) don’t do it. 2) Believe me when I say it’s worth it. Omni Props has a reputation in the Destiny community for incredible creations and unique views on the game, and it doesn’t hurt that the mastermind behind the masks is a priceless cinnamon bun that must be guarded at all costs. As a result, it’s a cosplayer’s dream to introduce you to Javier Martinez, the creative mind behind some quite astounding contributions to our gorgeous microcosm of amazing individuals.

Without further ado, let’s get started talking about the creative process of transforming digital love into real-life works of art, with special thanks to those who assisted him along the way:

First and foremost! What’s the matter with you?! Introduce yourself to the Destiny community if you haven’t already. Who are you, what do you do, and what is your life’s answer?

Hello, everyone! My name is Javier Martinez (everyone calls me Javi), and I lead the Omni Props cosplay project. I’m a costume and prop maker that enjoys bringing well-known cosplays and props from video games and movies to life. Building battle-worn foam armor, 3D printed weapons of death, and exquisite stitch work on textiles are all part of my job. I also dabble with digital art now and then! When I’m dressed up as my guy Variks, I like to think of myself as a one-man army.

What is the solution to life? It all depends on how I’m feeling. While playing video games is a good on-brand remedy, chocolate milk is always an excellent solution.

On that, I’ll get back to you.

I swear, people will go to great lengths for chocolate milk. Speaking of which, in a completely nonsensical segue, I really like your cosplay! When and why did you decide to start practicing your skill, since it’s so practical and transformative?

I’ve always loved Legos and have played with them since I was a youngster (and still do). Sure, I’d follow the directions on occasion, but I typically simply let my imagination run wild, resulting in bizarre creations such as a robotic dinosaur that shoots studs from its little arms, inspired by one of my favorite movies, Jurassic Park. Of course, I grew up watching fantasy and science fiction films, but the one that jumped out to me was reportedly the one about cloned dinosaurs. “How did they construct that?” mini-Javi wondered as he saw these massive life-like dinosaurs on TV.

I’ve wanted to let my creative juices flow since then, but I’ve been baffled as to how to do it. Then, around the time I was in high school, I came across a series of YouTube videos all about “cosplay.” So I dove right in and was immediately hooked. My parents were quite supportive and assisted me in purchasing my first batch of cardboard and EVA foam.

In my freshman year, I built a custom Halo ODST cosplay out of everyday materials and I thought I was an actual Hell Jumper of the UNSC. I told myself, “I want to do something even cooler next. Like, something really cool.” Then, I heard about this little game called Destiny coming out the next year and once I saw the Hunter in the live-action Law of the Jungle %3CbrUCQZFAQPTQtrFrTu6Hb4vwsw - Community Focus - Omni PropsMy Name is Byf. Suddenly, the showroom’s lights went out due to an outage. I was confused, but then I noticed Byf and everyone else turned around to face me in this sort of awe-like manner. That’s when I realized, the LED lights I challenged myself to build were the only things lighting up in the building! Moments like that, although one hundred percent not planned, are truly rewarding.

You know you’re a total badass, right? I appreciate providing cosplayers the chance to pay it forward a little with Community Focus articles that feature cosplay: do you have any recommendations for rookie cosplayers wishing to make their mark on the world?

Oh, this is a fantastic question! People sometimes shy away from cosplay because they see the pros out there and think to themselves, “What are you talking about, bro?! I’d never be able to. There isn’t enough time or money.” And, to be honest, I still have those feelings now and again. But here’s the thing: every morning when you put on your favorite t-shirt and a pair of jeans, surprise! You’re dressing up like a character! You’re projecting how you want people to see you and how your appearance will affect those around you. You are your own persona in terms of how you seem, move, speak, and behave. And although you should be proud of your appearance, why not take it a step further?

“However, Javi, I’d prefer to dress up like a Titan or a four-armed extraterrestrial!” So here’s a challenge for you: go grab some carboard. Yes, the cardboard in your closet or the garbage can. Get some duct tape and start hamming it up. If you look at the cardboard through a creative perspective, it may be a complete raid armor set or even something as little as a Ghost. Watch internet videos, take notes, and then give me your creations! I want to assist because the cosplay community is incredible, and everyone who wants to be a part of it should do so. My DMs are always available to anybody interested in learning how to get started, seeking assistance, or just discussing the craft.

What would be your ideal cosplay if you could do it, and why should it be Taniks simply so we can bring him back again?

“TaNiKs hOuSe nO hOuSe nO hOuSe nO hOuSe nO He-” Sorry. Habit is a powerful force. I’ll grant you that creating Taniks would be a meme-love-letter to the Destiny community. But, apart from memes, I’ve discovered that, since Variks, I’ve enjoyed the challenge of creating more non-Guardian cosplays. I’ve always had my eye on the Vex if it’s going to be set in the Destiny world. Maybe a Minotaur? They have such a commanding presence! But I’m trying to wait and see what Lightfall has in store for me; there’s so much potential!

Let’s discuss games! OK, Destiny, right, concentrate, Hippy! What is your favorite class, and how do you look?

Isn’t it true that I need to be kind here? Well, I’ve been playing Hunter since the Destiny 1 beta, but I’ve been mixing it up every Season with my Warlock and Titan since Beyond Light. They, too, need love, OK!? I like playing all three of them. I suppose you could call me an Omni Guardian (pun intended!). My Guardians have one thing in common: they all like Arc. My Arcstrider Hunter is lightning fast, chaining arcs through adversaries and clearing areas in a matter of seconds. As a Stormcaller Warlock, chaos pours from my hands, and nothing is too huge for my earth-shattering, Thundercrashing Titan.

Trinity Ghoul is my go-to Exotic whenever the occasion arises. I do, however, have a shady history with Tractor Cannon in the Crucible… Needless to say, Arc 3.0 has piqued my interest. With all of my gushing, I’m sure that isn’t evident.

Speaking of personalizing your Destiny experience with a cozy build, what would you add to Destiny 2 if you could add anything – even a brand-new subclass? And don’t worry, there’s no judgement here; I’ve already said that I desire pettable creatures and body pillows, so go crazy.

That’ll be the day when I can pet my Ghost! He’s been through a lot. If I could add anything to the Tower, it would have to be a chamber for our Guardians. Where do they sleep at night? What is their set-up like? Do they have a colossal number of RGB lights to gamerfy their posh digs? I’m looking for answers! Just a little area to display the trophies we’ve collected in the furthest reaches of space. Whether it’s the head of Taniks or a ramen coupon that’s been framed and hung on the wall. (I refuse to destroy mine, Bungie.) Also, please allow me to embrace Variks. Is it too much to hope for?

What are your opinions on how the game has changed since launch? You’ve spoken about The Witch Queen on your channels, so what are your thoughts on how the game has changed? Are there any adjustments you’d want to see in future updates?

Destiny has been my go-to from the beginning of high school and continues to be so now that I’m a college graduate. Omni Props has a bright future ahead of it, and I owe it all to Destiny (and the Bungie crew!) for helping me discover my passion. It’s incredible to see the game evolve from a shooter with narrative aspects on the side to one that puts the story front and center without compromising the excitement of hacking and slicing aliens. I usually bring popcorn to the raid races and like actively experiencing the sensation of anticipation when the community discovers a hidden objective. I’ve also observed a significant shift in our Guardians’ participation in the tale as it progresses. It was exactly what I was looking for, and I hope it may be developed more in the future!

The finest feature, though, is crossplay! It’s really amazing to me to be able to play with long-time friends and not have to worry about what playform they’re using.

What would you say to the Destiny community as a whole if you could only say one thing?

Guardians, keep welding dream into reality. Continue to make a positive impact in people’s lives, as I’ve seen you all do time and time again, whether it’s via charitable projects like the Bungie Foundation or just by making others feel welcome. And if you can share some compassion and creativity, go for it! All I have to say is to keep being yourself.

Javi, thank you so much for spending time with us! We should absolutely do it again in the future. Is there anybody you want to thank in your Community Focus before we send you out to produce even more epicness? Also, how can people help your future work by finding you?

First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to my family and friends for always encouraging and supporting me since I began assembling Lego sets. You’re well aware of who you are! Thank you to the Destiny cosplay community for your support and new connections; let’s keep making some wild things together!

Thank you, too, to everyone at Bungie for enabling me to live out my sci-fi ideas, and thank you, Liana, for organizing this Community Focus. This is one of my greatest wishes coming true, and young Javi in his Hunter costume from 2014 would be ecstatic right now!

I’m on the internet, so that’s where folks can find me. OmniProps - Community Focus - Omni Props
