Why You Should Back: Hamlet

If you are familiar with the Shakespearean tragedy Hamlet, then it’s likely that you know the story of its protagonist who struggles to avenge his father. Perhaps on your most recent trip back to school or college, you may have even had one of your classmates read William Shakespeare’s famous play aloud for an English class. But how many people can say they actually completed this great work?

“Hamlet” is one of the most famous plays in English literature. It has been adapted many times, but there is something about the original that makes it so compelling. The story is told through a series of soliloquies and its themes include revenge, morality, and madness.

Why You Should Back: Hamlet

Why You Should Back: Hamlet is available on Kickstarter. is the newest installment in our interview series. We met with Mighty Boards’ founder and CEO to learn more about their newest launch. He wanted to make something different and category-defining, which he thinks he’s done with this game. The Kickstarter campaign will begin on March 8, 2022. 1. In a few lines, how would you define your product?

Hamlet is a village-building game that emphasizes spontaneous, emergent development as well as logistics. The community develops naturally, with a variety of forms and no grid. The economy develops on its own as players construct and improve structures and resources. You must adjust your distribution networks to the roads and distances that arise between buildings. Almost everything in Hamlet is emergent. You get the impression that you are constructing a community. Something you’ll be able to name in the end.

2. Who is the team that is bringing this to market? What is your history, and how did you come to start this?

Hello, my name is David. I’m a game creator who formerly worked as an actress and subsequently as a podiatrist (crazy story I know). After releasing a few board games, I relocated to Poland in 2016 and worked for 5 years as a game designer at CD Projekt Red, where I launched a number of AAA video game titles (Thronebreaker, Gwent, Cyberpunk 2077). Then I resigned and returned to Malta. At Mighty Boards, I am currently the CEO/Designer.

Hamlet is a unique endeavor for me since it seems like a homecoming. I spent much of my leisure time there playing board games, producing expansions to my earlier game, Petrichor – and dabbling with Hamlet, my favorite “dream” project, while I was working on video games. I’ve always wanted to make a cozy village-building game, similar to how I felt when I was playing video games like The Settlers and Age of Empires. It was very reassuring to watch a hamlet settle and thrive, with all those small employees moving about bringing supplies or doing their own occupations. Hamlet’s major goal is to elicit this emotion. It’s also a watershed moment for me since it reflects the consolation that game creation provided me through moments of intense work, as well as my return “home” to board game design, where my adventure began.

3. How would you compare your game to other games?

“Roads and Boats” and “Brass” are the two games that come to mind when I think about Hamlet. Brass is one of my all-time favorite metals. I hadn’t seen Roads and Boats until after I’d finished Hamlet, and playtesters noticed comparable “feelings.” Hamlet has a few themes that Brass excels at – players producing resources that other players to consume, and opportune road construction. In addition to the themes that Roads and Boats excels at – moving resources, allowing other players to utilize resources you produced, the sensation of a developing, settled settlement, and the game’s “openness.” There is one significant distinction here. Hamlet takes 10 minutes to study and 60-120 minutes to perform (depending on number of players). That’s a lot less time than both of those games. While still providing a rewarding and rich village-building experience. In some respects, I’d argue it’s more rewarding – but it was written by me, so take it with a grain of salt.

4. What distinguishes your game from others?

I like games where you have to develop a village. But I wanted to design one that wasn’t about tableau creation or hexe placement in strict grids. I believe that games like these abstract the sensation of a village’s development. I wanted something that was more fluid, natural, and unstructured, similar to how communities form in the actual world. All of this comes in a package that’s simple to pick up, takes less than two hours to play, yet is nonetheless satisfyingly deep. Hamlet, I believe, checks all of these criteria, and I adore it.

5. How can everyone be certain that they will get high-quality components and that you will keep all of your promises?

Mighty Boards’ 12th Kickstarter campaign is for Hamlet. We’re recognized for producing high-quality items that are both lovely to look at and to handle. We just finished delivering one of our most recent Kickstarters, Petrichor: Collector’s Edition, and the feedback from supporters has been fantastic.

6. Why should someone support your initiative?

Want to develop a community in an organic, fluid, deep, fast-paced, and highly gorgeous way? All of these qualities are present in Hamlet, as well as others. Oh, and the deluxe edition we’re offering on Kickstarter is only available to this campaign’s supporters! We’d be thrilled if you could join us and help us tell this tale!
