Ukraine Retro Game Museum Destroyed By Russian Bombing

A Ukrainian museum dedicated to retro video games was destroyed by a recent bombing in the capital city of Kiev. The destruction is yet another reminder that, even if we try our best not to forget about it, history does indeed repeat itself.

As a consequence of Russia’s protracted and brutal invasion of Ukraine, a museum devoted to vintage computers and video games was destroyed earlier this week in Ukraine. While the loss of a museum pales in comparison to the hundreds that died or were wounded, it is nevertheless a tragic loss, since over 500 items of computing history spanning decades were lost.

Dmitry Cherepanov, the museum’s director, was based in Mariupol, Ukraine. The Ukrainian Software and Computer Museum’s Twitter account acknowledged the news of its demolition. Cherepanov, the owner, is said to be safe.

Cherepanov, on the other hand, said on Facebook that he had not only lost his museum, but also his house.

Cherapanov said on the it8bit Club’s Facebook page, “That’s it, the Mariupol computer museum is no longer there.” “All that’s left of my 15-year collection is bits of recollections on the museum’s page, website, and radio station.”

Cherepanov will attempt to keep his it8bit website up and running, although he naturally has more pressing matters to attend to right now.

Gizmodo paid a visit to the museum in 2019 and spoke with Cherepanov. As stated in that description, he began collecting computers while the Soviet bloc was developing its own computers.

Cherepanov has set up a PayPal account and is seeking contributions to support him and others in Ukraine after his house and collection were destroyed.

Thousands of people have already died and been wounded as a result of Russia’s continuing and deadly invasion of Ukraine. Over 3 million people have been compelled to depart the nation, resulting in a significant and increasing refugee crisis.

This saddens me (and I’m not even going to mention how angry I am over the war crimes being done). I’ve always been interested by the history of video games and computers in general. I got access to a computer later in the 1990s and also some gaming consoles at a friend’s home since I was born in the late 1980s. But for those who were more directly engaged and watched the early stages, it must be incredible to see where we are today. When I watch youngsters playing games on their phones that could only be imagined only a few decades ago, I wonder whether they comprehend how much effort mankind has put in to offer them with that opportunity. I hope kids will one day respect history.
