Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition Release Dates Announced

Paramount Pictures has announced the release dates for Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition. This is a special edition of the film that includes new footage and remastered sound.

The streaming and physical release dates for Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition have been revealed by Paramount. On April 5 (Initial Contact Day), the day in Star Trek history when Vulcans established first contact with Earth, Paramount+ will begin streaming the picture in 4K. In September, the 4K disc will be available for purchase, along with new unique additional content.

Director Robert Wise updated the picture in 2001 to improve the cut and visual effects. His new vision was published on DVD in regular definition and was well received by fans, but it has never been accessible in high definition. The film has been prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby VisionTM high dynamic range (HDR) and a new powerful and immersive Dolby Atmos® soundtrack, meticulously assembled and restored by producer David C. Fein and preservationist Mike Matessino, both of whom originally collaborated with Wise. Fein and Matessino organized a team of special effects professionals, lead by Daren Dochterman, who returned as visual effects supervisor, and used the Paramount Archives’ immense resources to recreate the effects not only in HD, but in Ultra HD. After more than six months of meticulous work, the remastered film now looks and sounds better than ever while remaining faithful to Wise’s original vision.
