SnowRunner-Review-%E2%80%93There are two extremes on a very broad range when it comes to sports becoming video games. On the one hand, there are the serious simulators that meticulously attempt to reproduce every element of the sport in the most accurate way possible. On the other hand, there is the “arcade” form of the sport, which is on the other end of the spectrum. We move from games like Burnout on the GameCube and the legendary Beetle Adventure Racing on the N64 to the very serious Gran Turismo series on the PlayStation family of devices when we talk about racing. For a long time, I thought the latter was the most realistic racing series in a video game. You get your vehicles, tweak them, and race them. That isn’t the case now. RiMS Racing, the most recent on-road motorcycle racing game, is currently the most detailed racing game I’ve ever played, but does it make it good?

RiMS is attractive. That is something I can tell you right now. Even the screws that keep the bikes together are depicted on the Switch. If the creators didn’t have a genuine passion for the sport bike racing genre, they would have delivered an Oscar-worthy performance that would deceive even the harshest critics. There are eight motorcycles in all, each of which has been painstakingly constructed in digital form. Even though you don’t need any more brands except Ducati and Honda, they offer you six more. That may not seem like a lot, but there aren’t as many manufacturers as there are for the four-wheeled equivalents we call automobiles. This is most likely why you see so many car racing games, yet every time someone is struck by lightning, you get a new cycle racing game. On top of a mountain. During a downpour. Pandas are dancing an Irish jig. To put it another way, it doesn’t happen very frequently.

If you want to learn more about what makes a bike of this class tick, RiMS will do the best it can without you having to buy an actual bike and all the components. Not only can you acquire a wide variety of components, but you can also adjust settings to see if you can make the bike handle better, move faster, stop on a dime, or simply improve tire grip to assist keep you from careening off the road if you take a curve too quickly. That was something I did a lot. That’s something I do a lot in most racing games. I’m beginning to believe that I’m not very skilled at racing games. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

If I were to offer a short recommendation to you, and you own one of the other gaming consoles on which RiMS is available, and you like motorcycle racing simulator games, it may be a good idea to get this game on something other than our beloved Switch. On the Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an amazing blast. In virtually every aspect, it’s fantastic. It is, however, an arcade racing game with no serious code strings. On the Switch, RiMS works well. If this is your only game console, you will be overjoyed. However, it has certain flaws that make me hesitant to suggest it to you or any of my friends.

For the hardware it’s operating on, the visuals have been severely reduced. It’s like wanting a PC tower with hand-chosen components that you carefully selected months before construction, but instead getting a Dell laptop. No disrespect to Dell or Nintendo; they’re fantastic at what they’re good at. Not just in terms of visuals and framerate, but also in terms of controls and how your bike acts, this game has more potential than what a portable device can provide.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a decent controller that helps you understand how these adjustments really behave if you’re going to spend an hour tweaking this and that to get your bike to behave in a manner that might help you win a race? You may forget about using the Joy-Con and playing with the Switch. Not only are there no analog triggers for feathering the brakes and throttle on any of the controllers, which can be worked around, but the small controller stick doesn’t have a long enough throw to offer you any decent control, and getting accustomed to the feel of the bike will take considerably longer. You may spend more time attempting to acquire a good feel for the standard bike than determining if the adjustments you made improved or worsened your experience.

While I applaud the studio for bringing cycle racing to a portable gaming system, the game falls far short of my expectations in terms of enjoyment due to the limitations of the hardware and the shoddy way in which it was ported and scaled down to fit. For effort, you get an A, but for execution, you get a D. That’s not to say you won’t enjoy it if you’re a sports fan; it’s just that you might want to skip this version and get it on a more powerful console to avoid the game’s more frustrating aspects.

Review of RiMS Racing
  • 6/10 for graphics
  • 6/10 for sound
  • 4/10 for gameplay
  • 5/10 for Persistent Appeal

5/10

Conclusions: MEDIOCRE

While it’s the most ambitious motorbike racing game I’ve ever played, many players will find it irritating due to the Switch’s and controllers’ restrictions. Unless you have no other console option and believe you can tolerate the lower framerates, scaled-back visuals, and challenging control because you are a die-hard fan of the sport, then give it a go since RiMS’ workmanship may be well worth it for you.
