Review - Windjammers 2 -

It would be a lie to pretend I was a fan of the original Windjammers. I’ve never played it or seen it in the wild, although I grew up in a city where there were at least two Neo Geo cabinets every block. That’s a shame, since I like the aesthetic and playability of most Neo Geo sports games. That hardware has a certain beauty to it that makes its sports games even more appealing. Regardless, I was eager to play Windjammers 2. If anything, I was interested in seeing it since it was produced by Dotemu, a business that has already established itself as one of the industry’s greatest retro revival producers.

Windjammers 2 Pong

This is still Pong, deep down. It’s only a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a

What better studio than the ones behind Streets of Rage 4 and the forthcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Metal Slug Tactics games to attempt a sequel to a 90s cult hit? Paon, a firm created by former Data East (the guys behind the original Windjammers) creators, has even given them its permission. Windjammers 2 is here to attempt to persuade the audience that simpler and faster-paced arcade games still have a place to shine in a time when we’re starved for arcade-like sports games, with most titles being intricate (and costly) simulations published at a higher price tag. I honestly believe they’ve accomplished even more than they intended.

You may be wondering, what exactly is Windjammers. It’ll be difficult to explain this really unusual idea for a sports game, but I’ll do my best. Windjammers is essentially what occurs when you combine Pong, frisbees, tennis, and the general fighting game pizazz of the Neo Geo period of games. In a miniature tennis-like court, two players battle against each other with the purpose of earning points by tossing a frisbee into the opponent’s goal. Throwing the disc is worth three points for the most part, except you hit the goal’s edges, which are worth five points. You may also get two points (or four points, depending on the court regulations) by tossing the disc on the ground and preventing your opponent from grabbing it before you do.

Windjammers 2 Casino

The Casino court adds a new level of craziness to the main gameplay cycle.

This would be uninteresting if you weren’t in charge of superpowered sportsmen who can race about the court like maniacs and unleash special attacks anytime you fill up a meter or manage to remain below a falling frisbee for a long. You may hurl Hadouken-style frisbees at your opponent, which can turn or knock them over, resulting in a clean goal if they don’t protect themselves effectively. You can easily capture your opponent’s disc if you sprint at it, and if you hit the punch button at the right time, you may effectively deflect a powerful assault back at them. In Windjammers 2, quick thinking is essential.

I’ll tell it how it is. Windjammers 2 was difficult for me at first. The game does a poor job of instructing you on how to play. It doesn’t provide you helpful advice on how to defeat adversaries or how to effectively counter each kind of assault. It wants you to play it again and over again, losing to adversaries until you figure out what’s going on, much like a good old quarter-guzzling Neo Geo game. It will undoubtedly frustrate gamers who are less patient. Those who can get over the first frustrating learning curve, on the other hand, will be rewarded with a very addicting arcade experience.

Windjammers 2 Ultimate

Make the most of your ultimate attacks to get a few more points.

Everything in Windjammers 2 has the same delicious Neo Geo atmosphere that has enthralled fans for the last 30 years. The cutscenes, the absence of loading screens, the fast-paced action, and even the sound design reminded me of SNK and its partners’ vintage arcade games. I could finally appreciate the over-the-top chaos that is Windjammers 2’s gameplay loop when I figured out the game’s subtleties. I ended up playing as a character that favors speed over strength, which allowed me to more readily repair my errors by sprinting towards the frisbee disc. Even though the arcade mode was still hard, I was finally winning a few bouts. It didn’t take long for me to get hooked to the loop in Windjammers 2.

Windjammers 2 incorporates hand-drawn characters and animations, similar to those found in Streets of Rage 4 and other contemporary Dotemu titles. To be clear, the game is visually stunning, but the top-down viewpoint does not do it credit. Onscreen, the characters are much too tiny, and the courts, although bright and inviting, are a little too static. The beautiful character models don’t shine as brightly as they did in Wonder Boy or Streets of Rage 4. At the very least, the game maintains a silky flawless framerate throughout.

Windjammers 2 Arcade

There are a few minigames in the arcade mode, one of which stars this wonderful lad.

Windjammers 2 is primarily a Neo Geo sports game set in the year 2022. Take this as the highest praise you can get. It’s a challenging yet insanely addicting arcade gem that’s difficult to master but oh so rewarding once you figure out the basics. It’s a great match for a handheld like the Switch since it’s fast-paced, has no loading windows, is visually appealing, and is jam-packed with information. Will this become a mainstay of the competitive gaming landscape as an eSport? I’m not sure whether an unique notion like this would appeal to a broad audience, but I for one am hoping it does. These extravagant contests are unquestionably more entertaining to watch than a standard FIFA match.

A fantastic blend of hand-drawn images with the typical Neo Geo art style. Although the top-down viewpoint may not allow these graphics to shine as brightly as they could, it is nonetheless visually appealing. This gameplay cycle may be confusing at first due to the game’s absence of a good tutorial system, but after you master all of Windjammers 2’s nuances, you’ll simply enjoy it. There’s a lot of space for scheming and experimenting.
Cheesy voice samples soon grate on your nerves. The music isn’t horrible, emulating the sonic style of previous Neo Geo games, but it doesn’t stand out as much as the rest of the game’s presentation. Windjammers 2 is a classic arcade game. It’s difficult to master, but once you do, it’s really satisfying. It’s frantic, inventive, and addicting. It’s also a fantastic match for a portable system.
Final Score: 8.5
