NASA to Retire International Space Station by Crashing It into the Pacific Ocean

The International Space Station (ISS) will be retired in 2024, when it is expected to crash into the Pacific Ocean. The ISS has been a significant space station since its inception and was crucial for NASA’s many missions including robotic exploration of Mars, providing an environment compatible with life on Earth, and maintaining continuous communication between spacecrafts around Earth.

NASA has disclosed that it aims to retire the famous satellite by 2031 by crashing it into a remote section of the Pacific Ocean known as Point Nemo, according to a new International Space Station Transition Report. Officially designated as “the oceanic pole of inaccessibility” and named after one of the main characters from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, Nemo is the furthest place in the ocean from land. Within a decade, the International Space Station will be decommissioned to make room for commercial destinations and markets in what NASA calls a “thriving space economy.”
