Last week, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at DICE 2022, and he had one message for the audience: creators should be paid better.

After his award speech, Spencer spoke with IGN on how players should respect artists, who are allegedly no strangers to getting threats for anything from gameplay idiosyncrasies to graphics downgrades to something as simple as ending a tale in a manner that doesn’t please fans. Developers, according to the Xbox CEO, are daring individuals who should be praised for their efforts.

“Keep playing, keep utilizing your voice,” Spencer said. “Understand the power of creation, the power of community.” “Another thing I’d want to add is that we should appreciate artists.” I believe that inventions are often militarized and exploited in wars between platforms and other entities. I admire anybody who has the courage to create something and put it out there… having their peers, the industry, and gamers play, evaluate, and discuss what they do, and let’s just enjoy the fact that so many fantastic games are coming out from so many creators, and understand it’s such a foundation for where this industry is heading.”

“In this company, we have a duty to everyone,” he continued. “We have a social obligation.” And we owe it to ourselves to take care of ourselves. Our task is straightforward: do all in our power to guarantee that everyone in our sector is treated with decency and respect.”

  • Throughout DICE, an industry-focused conference that brings together executives and developers for a week of networking and discussions culminating in the DICE Awards, toxicity was a key issue.
  • Spencer has always advocated for increased diversity in gaming, and Xbox is now one of the industry’s most accessible platforms.
  • He also remembered the “painful” moment when women spoke about their Xbox experiences and “felt the passion, the rage, the disappointment.”
