American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story (2021)

After years of struggling in the NFL, Kurt Warner became a Super Bowl Champion with the St. Louis Rams and led them to a 13-3 record during his MVP season. The book American Underdog tells that story as well as how he got there.

The “American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story” is a film that follows the life of football player, Kurt Warner. It has been widely praised for its accurate portrayal of the NFL and sport as well as its emotional story. The film was filmed in several locations throughout the United States.

If you’re like me and have been a long-time football fan, you’re well-versed on Kurt Warner. If you were like me in January 2000, you were riveted to the television as Kurt Warner stunned the country by winning the Super Bowl and winning the MVP award. He was a washed-up football player who worked as a supermarket stock boy after being released by the Green Bay Packers before the start of the 1994 season. In 1995, he joined the much-maligned Arena Football League. He was about 30 years old at the time. Many people said, “There’s no way this man is worth investing in; the Rams are insane,” but he proved them wrong. It was a Cinderella Story for the ages, inspiring us all to never give up on our aspirations, no matter how difficult things may seem.

American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Tale is the first film to tell Warner’s incredible story, and I really enjoyed it. Most of us are familiar with the highlights of Kurt’s narrative, but this film delves into the depths of his and Brenda’s relationship. It’s a film about love, success, and, above all, faith. Kurt and Brenda’s faith in God was and remains very vital to them and their journey, as seen in American Underdog. But don’t worry: it’s not a “preachy” video at all, so if that was a concern for you, rest assured that although this film respects their religion and how it helped them overcome even the most difficult circumstances in their life, it doesn’t preach or attempt to convince the spectator to believe as they do.

I may be prejudiced since I’m a major admirer of Zachary Levi, but he performed an absolutely fantastic job portraying three-time Super Bowl champion Kurt Warner. It’s been a pleasure to see Zac’s career take off the way it has, and I really hope that this film propels him even farther into the limelight and opens up even more doors for him. He changed his voice to sound like Kurt and went to “quarterback training” to learn how to properly throw a football. Levi has put his heart and soul into this part, and it shows.

Brenda, Kurt’s wife, is played by Anna Paquin (X-Men, True Blood), who performs an excellent job as always. Anna is an incredible performer, and her chemistry with Levi helps to bring Kurt and Brenda’s 29-year romance to life and their love story to life. Brenda’s faith is entirely crushed at one sequence in the film, and Anna’s honest anguish is sad.

The rest of the cast is equally impressive. When we first meet Brenda, she already has two children, Zack (Hayden Zaller) and Jesse (Cora Wilkerson), both of whom are not only cute but also excellent performers. They have a bright future ahead of them, particularly Hayden, who is legally blind in real life. That doesn’t deter him in the least, and he steals the show in almost every scene in which he appears. I’m excited to see where his career takes him! Dennis Quaid plays NFL coach Dick Vermeil, while Adam Baldwin plays University of Northern Iowa coach Terry Allen in American Underdog. It was great to see Baldwin and Levi together again (they co-starred in the sitcom Chuck from 2007 to 2012); their chemistry is off the charts, and if you’re a Chuck fan, you’ll enjoy Baldwin ranting at Levi like he used to. Dick Vermeil is perfectly portrayed by Dennis Quaid. He doesn’t appear until the very end of the film, but he does a fantastic job. When he struggled to get Warner on the Rams’ roster, Vermeil was one of the few people who believed in him, telling him, “There’s something unique about you, kid, and I can’t wait to find out what it is.” “My wife even commented that he did a better job than I do,” the real Dick Vermeil told USA Today of Quaid’s depiction of himself.

I strongly suggest seeing American Underdog, which has a terrific cast and an emotive narrative. The filmmakers and writers did an excellent job bringing Kurt and his narrative to the big screen; Warner and Brenda’s admiration speaks for itself. The finale is one of my favorite parts of the film, and the mixing of Super Bowl XXXIV with real NFL video blended in with the actors was a brilliant decision. It transports you back to the moment you first saw it, and the feelings are palpable. Thank you to the NFL for allowing this to happen since it adds a lot to the movie. This film will make you laugh, weep, and leave you full of optimism that all will work out in the end; all you have to do is believe in fate.

And what about fate? It’s for the underdogs, after all.
